Upcoming Samsung Pocket PC with Mouse Pointer?

Our pal at DinarSoft spotted the following Samsung Pocket PC phone at GITEX this week. In addition to the standard fare, the device appears to have a navigable mouse pointer controlled by some scroller mechanism underneath the screen (and presumably embedded in the d-pad).

I have to admit, this is kind of cool. There's been times when I don't want to pull out the stylus, and I find touching the screen cumbersome in Pocket PC -- the mouse pointer would be a perfect compromise. I know the hx4700 had a mouse pointer-esque technology, but this one seems a lot more convenient than having to use the hx4700 touchpad.

Canon introduced the PIXMA mini320 Compact Photo Printer, expanding its high-quality compact photo printer line. The Canon PIXMA mini320 happens to be the company’s first photo printer to be able to print photo lab-quality images up to 5 inches x 7 inches.

Another great feature of the Canon PIXMA mini320 Compact Photo Printer is that it sports a bright, high-definition 2.5-inch LCD screen with wide viewing angles. Besides, the Easy-Scroll Wheel interface enables consumers to navigate through menus and images in a speedy manner.

The inkjet-based PIXMA mini320 printer has a maximum resolution of 9600×2400 colour dpi for vibrant color printouts of a borderless 4 x 6 inch photo lab-quality print in approximately 40 seconds and a borderless 5 x 7 inch photo in approximately 52 seconds.

Additionally, users are also able to print photos from compatible memory cards, digital cameras or camcorders, Bluetooth devices or compatible camera phones. Carrying this printer around is quite a breeze, as it has a retractable handle and features a user-friendly fold-up design. Also, an optional battery LK-61 is available for portable printing from almost any location. This battery costs an additional $ 79.99.

Yet another amazing feature of the Canon PIXMA mini320 Compact Photo Printer is that you won’t have to wait for a long time to get it started up. This printer features the new Canon Quick Start technology that starts up the user interface in a few seconds.

The PIXMA mini320 Printer also employs the company’s ChromaLife100 system together with FINE print head technology for long-lasting photo prints. In fact, the company claims that if you uses genuine Canon photo papers and dye inks, prints can last for up to 100 years without fading. The Canon PIXMA mini320 Compact Photo Printer carries an estimated retail selling price of $179.99.

Breaking News : Google launches new Browser-Google Chrome

Google's new Chrome browser sets a new standard for the Web as an application platform

I was as blindsided by Google Chrome as everyone else, but there's no denying that its release was a momentous occasion. Chrome is more than just a browser; it represents Google's latest entry in the ongoing discussion of standards and best practices for the Web as an application platform. As such, it may be the company's most important offering since Gears.

"From my perspective, Google Chrome and Gears are entering the Web from two directions," says Google's Adam Goodman in Scott McCloud's comic-strip introduction to Chrome. "The [Chrome] browser project is an effort to make the Web better for users. The Gears team wants to make the Web better for developers."

Lucky for us, Google Chrome ships with all of the functionality of the Gears plug-in for Firefox and Internet Explorer already baked in. But I don't agree that users are the only beneficiaries of the other effort that's gone into Chrome. There's a lot going on beneath the hood of the new browser that should interest developers, too.

Roaring engines
For starters, Google's decision to use the WebKit HTML rendering engine may not be surprising, but it's still significant. WebKit, an improved version of the open source KHTML project, is the rendering engine used by Apple for its Safari browser. It's also the engine found in both Apple's iPhone and Google Android, arguably the two most important mobile Web platforms today.

That means Google Chrome isn't yet another browser to support, as my pal Paul Venezia suggests. Rather, it's one more vote in favor of making WebKit a primary target for new Web development projects. It only makes sense to test against the engine that's available on the widest range of platforms and devices.

And popularity isn't the only reason why WebKit was a good choice. Current WebKit builds are very fast. As a result, pages generally pop up more quickly in Chrome than in Firefox 3. More importantly, WebKit leads the pack in Web standards compliance (with Opera a close second). The more developers get on board with writing fully standards-compliant code, free of undocumented tricks and browser-specific hacks, the better it will be for everyone.

Chrome raises the bar in other ways, as well. Its V8 code execution engine beats Firefox's forthcoming TraceMonkey to the punch by offering a just-in-time native compilation engine for JavaScript. That means it runs Web applications at blazing speeds. But V8 is also a proper virtual machine environment; it's designed to handle multiple execution threads and memory management better than any other JavaScript implementation to date. For developers, these efforts further cement JavaScript's position as a legitimate application development platform, rather than a toy language for one-off scripting.

From specs to prototype
I wholeheartedly recommend reading the introductory comic strip for more insight into how Google rebuilt the browser from the ground up. Everything, from the browser security model to how plug-ins are managed, has been crafted with the utmost care. Google Chrome really is the next step in the ongoing project to create the ultimate client for the Web application platform.

To understand what I mean by that, think of the drafting of Web standards as the requirements-gathering phase of Web browser development. The various specifications describe the type of documents that the browser will be expected to parse and how it should deal with them when it receives them. With Chrome, Google has taken the next step. It has offered us its own vision of what a reference implementation of the browser should look like -- not just how it should render pages, but how each module of the application should operate and interoperate.

Mind you, we don't have to just take Google's word for it. For example, I still think this fixation on JavaScript might be a little bit unhealthy. But that's fine. Because Chrome is open source, we're free to take the ideas -- and even the code -- that we want, and leave the rest. Or we can add the parts that are missing: an ad blocker, for example.

Google doesn't need Chrome to be a "Firefox-killer," or to become the dominant browser on the market. The important thing is that Chrome will keep us talking -- and in so doing, as Google is so fond of saying, it will help to push the Web forward. It's high time that we developed new standards and practices for today's Web. In that discussion, Google now clearly sits at the head of the table.

Microsoft to Incorporate Touch Screen Technology Into Upcoming OS

The technology, which will be built into the Windows operating system to be launched in 2010, will let people use their fingers to manipulate its software on the screen.

The technology is expected to drive a whole new class of personal computers in the next few years, reported the Wall Street Journal.

Microsoft, which demonstrated the technology at D: All Things Digital conference in Carlsbad, Calif., showed how a person can draw images using fingers. Microsoft was tight lipped about other features of its next generation operating system, informally being called Windows 7.

Earlier this month Microsoft showcased its prototype of a 4X6 foot digital whiteboard that reacts to the human touch to demonstrate the multi-touch technology.

During a presentation at Microsoft’s CEO Summit, Bill Gates said “All the surfaces, horizontal surfaces, vertical surfaces, will eventually have an inexpensive screen display capability and software that sees what you’re doing.”

Intel lists new low-cost processors

Intel updated its processor pricing list with low-cost quad-core and Core 2 Duo desktop processors. A new Celeron D model was also listed.

Intel lists the Q8200 at $224, one of the least expensive quad-core chips that the company now offers. The venerable Q6600 is the only Core 2 Quad that is less expensive.

The 45-nanometer processor has a core clock speed of 2.33GHz and 4MB of cache memory. This is a relatively small amount of cache memory as most Intel desktop quads offered now come with 6MB, 8MB, or 12MB of cache memory. Generally, the more cache memory the better the performance.

The chip has a front-side bus speed of 1333 MHz. The front-side bus carries data between the processor and other silicon.

Intel also shows a new E series Core 2 Duo processor. The E5200 is priced at $84, the lowest-cost Core 2 Duo chip on the list. It has a core clock speed of 2.5GHz, 2MB of cache memory, and an 800MHz front-side bus.

Intel also lists a new Celeron D processor for $53. The 450 slots in above the current 440. The 450 runs at 2.2GHz, has 512K of cache memory, and an 800MHz front-side bus.

Virus Infects Space Station Laptops (Again)

Viruses intended to steal passwords and send them to a remote server infected laptops in the Space Station in July, NASA confirmed Tuesday.

Space Station

And according to NASA, this wasn't the first infection.

"This is not the first time we have had a worm or a virus," NASA spokesman Kelly Humphries said. "It's not a frequent occurrence, but this isn't the first time."

That suggests that even in the future where space travel becomes an experience to complain about, rather than get dressed up for, computer viruses will still be tagging along uninvited.

NASA downplayed the news, calling the virus mainly a "nuisance" that was on non-critical space station laptops used for things like e-mail and nutritional experiments.

NASA and its partners in the space station are now trying to figure out how the virus made it onboard and how to prevent that in the future, according to Humphries.

NASA declined to name the virus, but SpaceRef.com, which broke the story, reported that the worm was W32.Gammima.AG worm -- a worm first detected in August 2007 that installs software that steals credentials for online games.

The virus did make it onto more than one laptop -- suggesting that it spread via some sort of intranet on the space station or via a thumb drive.

Humphries did not know when the laptops entered the space station or what country bought them, though he did indicate that the hardened equipment on the space station was typically purchased by Russia or the United States.

The International Space Station has no direct internet access, but astronauts can send and receive mail though a KU band data link also used for data and video transfer, according to Humphries.

That means the space station laptops are not connected to the net, according to Humphries.

"Everything is scanned before it goes up, so it's an indirect connection," Humphries said.

As for whether mission critical systems are connected to the same network as these kinds of laptops? "I don't know and even if I did, I wouldn't be able to tell you for IT security reasons," Humphries said.
